| Rafters rescued from rain-swollen Delaware |
|
POND EDDY – Six people, who were stranded on the Delaware River at the Pond Eddy Bridge when their raft capsized Saturday, were rescued safe and sound. Police and fire departments received 911 calls shortly after 2 p.m. of a capsized raft on the Delaware at the bridge with five stranded rafters needing to be rescued from the bridge base. Initial reports suggested a 10-year-old was also swept down river after the raft capsized. State Police Aviation was summoned along with Port Jervis and Sparrowbush water search and rescue teams. The rescued rafters had trouble communicating with emergency personnel because of a language barrier; however, a Sullivan County deputy sheriff arrived and was able to communication with them and learned it was not a 10-year-old, but a 43-year-old man that was swept away and was missing. After an intensive search, word came the man had made it to safety by boarding another raft and making it to shore. No serious injuries were reported. The Delaware River is extremely high because of the recent rains and authorities advise all boaters and rafters to watch for large debris in the water, such as fallen trees.
