Crips gang member and friend arrested with loaded gun

HIGHLAND – Two men are in the Ulster County Jail on charges that they possessed a loaded semi-automatic handgun.

The two were stopped in a Chevrolet Trailblazer on Route 9W in Highland Friday night after the URGENT task force received a tip.

Austin Vanvoorhees, 23, with addresses at 36 Fairview Avenue in Poughkeepsie and Vineyard Avenue in Highland, and Joseph Adams, 27, of 11 Tillson Avenue in Highland were each charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a felony.

Police said Adams is a member of the Crips street gang. Both men were arraigned in Town of Lloyd Court and remanded to the Ulster County Jail on $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 property bond.
