Drivers overcharged for gas at some Thruway service areas

ALBANY – For a anyone who has ever gassed up on the Thruway, for years you expected to pay more than at your neighborhood gas station.

Now, an audit by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s Office determined that drivers overpaid for gas, ranging from two cents to 26 cents a gallon, at some Thruway travel plazas because station operators did not follow contract requirements. That was according to an audit released Friday by DiNapoli.

Auditors found three stations, two in the Hudson Valley – Sloatsburg and New Baltimore – overcharged customers.

In total, auditors estimated customers overpaid about $2,900 for gas.

The third gas station that overcharged was in Dewitt.
