Engaging youth in community projects
Time: 7:00pm
Location: CVI Building in Ferndale
Opportunities for young people to become involved in volunteer projects throughout Sullivan County are the subject of a seminar hosted by Sullivan Renaissance. Geared toward adult leaders and volunteers, the seminar will address several key areas:
* A simple assessment that can be done by any organization to help identify young people in the community
*Ideas to recruit and reward youth volunteers
* Sullivan Renaissance opportunities to engage youth including: grants, internships, scholarships and program ideas
* Models that have worked in other communities

Interested in pursuing a career in nursing?
Location: Rubin Pollack Education Center, Ferndale-Loomis Road, Liberty
Sullivan County BOCES Career and Technical Education Center will be hosting two information sessions about the BOCES LPN (Licensed Practical Nursing) Program. Potential students can choose to attend on Thursday, February 4th, or Wednesday, March 3rd, and multiple sessions are being offered to fit busy schedules: 1:00 PM to 2:00PM; 4:00 PM to 5:00PM, or 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. All sessions will be held at the Rubin Pollack Education Center near Liberty, in the Career & Tech Dining Room.

"Four Chaplains" Memorial Service
Time: 12:00pm
Location: Pine Bush Methodist Church, Route 302
The Orange County American Legion will be having a "Four Chaplains" Memorial Service. This service is held annually the first Sunday in February in a different location in Orange County. It is open to all religious denominations, and ministers from the Methodist Church, Catholic Church, Jewish Community and Presbyterian and others will be taking part.

This year will be very special because it is also Boy Scout Sunday and the Hudson Valley Council of the BSA will also be in attendance with veterans.

We will also have refreshments after the service for all that would like to join in.

Letters Home in Time of War
Time: 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Location: National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, New Windsor
Valentine's Day Program at The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor

Valentine's Day is different when loved ones are far from home and in harm's way. Sometimes the only connection with family, friends and lovers is through the written word.

The program will will reflect the entire range of wars for which Americans have been awarded the Purple Heart. Although the modern Purple Heart was not created until 1932, veterans from as far back as the Civil War applied for, and were awarded the Purple Heart. At times funny, serious, poignant or even political, the letters personalize the experience of war in a way that history books cannot. To set the stage for each era represented, musical selections will be performed.

Dutchess Medicare orientation sessions
Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm
Location: Poughkeepsie Galleria Community Room or the Starr Library
The Dutchess County Office for the Aging will present a free training session on Medicare for residents who are approaching the age of 65 at the same time at two separate locations. Sessions will be held in the Poughkeepsie Galleria Community Room and also at the Starr Library, 68 W. Market Street.

Attending either workshop will help seniors get a basic overview of what Medicare is and what it covers.

NDH February Blood Drive
Time: 12:30am - 5:30pm
Location: Northern Dutchess Hospital, Rhinebeck
Northern Dutchess Hospital will host a Blood Drive in the Hospital's Cafeteria Conference Room. Healthy individuals who are at least 17 years old and who weigh at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood. Donors are eligible after fifty-seven days from their last blood donation.

The need for blood is greater than ever due to the Haiti earthquake disaster. At the request of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the American Red Cross is providing blood and blood products to Haiti, as well as first aid, food, water, and emotional support. There is a particular need for donors with Type O negative blood as it is universal and can be given to anyone, regardless of their blood type, and is often used in emergency situations. ...[more details]

Ice fishing contest
Time: 6:00am - 3:00pm
Location: Fireman's Camp, Sackett Lake, Rubin Road
The Monticello Fire Department will be hosting its Annual Ice-Fishing Contest. There will be cash prizes and trophies for the adult division and trophies for the kid's division.

The cost to enter the event is $10 per adult (14 & over), $5 per child ages 7-13 and children under 6 are free. The cost to enter includes a Continental breakfast.

Food and refreshments will be sold at registration and at your location on the ice and there will be 5 different raffles and 2 - 50/50's held throughout the day.

Pre-registration can be done prior to February 14th at the Monticello Fire Department located on Richardson Avenue or you can register at the Lake the day of the event.

Humane Society of Port Jervis Lasagna Dinner
Time: 2:00pm - 5:00pm
Location: 49-51 Sussex Street, Port Jervis
At the Drew Methodist Church.

Take out dinners served in your own containers from 2PM to 3PM. Seated dining is 3PM to 5PM. There is no snow date.

Tickets are $8.00 each and can be purchased at the shelter, 202 Route 209, Port Jervis or at the door the day of the Dinner.

Town of Hyde Park Historical Society
Time: 7:00pm
Location: Route 9 at Church Street, Hyde Park
The Town of Hyde Park Historical Society will meet at the Hyde Park United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The featured speaker will be Leigh Anne Bishop, who will show a DVD and talk about "Oak Terrace -- Eleanor Roosevelt's Grandmother Hall's estate in Tivoli." This property, overlooking the Hudson River, is currently for sale and is where Eleanor grew up in her earlier years during the summers.

After the presentation there will be refreshments and a business meeting. Anyone interested in local history is invited to attend.
